Our Mountains

In the north of the province of Palencia there are several regions and valleys known under the broad name of Montaña Palentina. It is bordered by León to the west, Cantabria to the north and Burgos to the east. It is a privileged area with a multitude of attractions and resources. It is home to the highest peaks in the province, such as Curavacas, Espigüete and Las Lomas. Rivers such as the Carrión and the Pisuerga are born here, which let their waters rest in the reservoirs of Camporredondo, Compuerto, Requejada and Ruesga.

On the route through Fuentes Carrionas you will come across the highest peaks of the Montaña Palentina: the Curavacas (2,525m), the Espigüete (2,450m) and Las Lomas (2,451m). The name of this vast territory is given by the Carrión River, which rises in the Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas. In addition to the abundant water of this river, there is also the water accumulated in the reservoirs of Camporredondo and Compuerto. The richness of the oak and beech forests, the areas of excellent pastures, the quantity and quality of fishing and hunting are guaranteed in these surroundings.

Part of this territory has been declared a Montaña Palentina Natural Park, with municipalities such as: Velilla del Río Carrión, Aguilar de Campoo, San Cebrián de Mudá, Cervera de Pisuerga, Triollo, Pollentinos, Brañosera, La Pernía, Castejón de la Peña and Dehesa de Montejo occupying the protected area of the natural park.
